Department of Geriatrics provides pre-graduate and post-graduate medical training in geriatrics and gerontology for students of master degree study program of General Medicine, master and bachelor degree study program of nursing care (in collaboration with the Institute of the Theory and Practice of Nursing Care), bachelor degree study program of ergotherapy and physiotherapy (in collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine) and social gerontology (in collaboration with the Department of Social Medicine).
Department of Geriatrics serves as clinical basis for postgraduate professional medical training (specialist training/fellowship) for doctors who want to specialize in geriatric medicine and for continuous medical education in geriatrics for other medical specialists. This educational activities are organized in collaboration with the Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education (IPVZ) in Prague.
Currently the Department of Geriatrics holds:
· the national accreditation for specialist training in geriatric medicine (geriatrics) from the Czech Ministry of Health and
· the national accreditation for continuing medical education in geriatrics and in internal medicine from the Czech Medical Chamber.
Department of Geriatrics became part of the European network of geriatrics training centers for young geriatricians (“Geriatric Visit Bank Program” under European Union Geriatric Medicine Society partnership, (see www.eugms.org ). Several faculty members have been nominated as members of National Board Certification Committee (Prof. Topinkova, Assoc. Prof. Neuwirth, Assist. Prof. Pelíšková) or serve as members of Czech Accreditation Committee – section Geriatrics of the Ministry of health, Czech Republic (Chair Prof. Topinkova).
· The Department started as the first in the Czech Republic postgraduate doctoral studies and PhD studies in GERONTOLOGY (as part of biomedicine studies at Charles University and Czech Academy if Sciences) and holds the accreditation of the Ministry of Education CR since 2001. Professor Eva Topinková, MD, PhD serves as a Chair of the Board Gerontology and tutor of the doctoral students at Charles University. More information at the website www.kav.cas.cz
Since 2000 Departmenmt of Geriatrics participates as a partner university in “European Master´s Studies in Gerontology” (EUMAG) Program led by Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (www.eumag.org ) is primarily focusecd on non-medical health care professionals.
Department of Geriatrics participates at University of the Third Age courses of the 1st Faculty of Medicine.

Geriatric clinical training of Master degree study program in General Medicine
Department of Geriatrics provides geriatric clinical training in the 4th year of master degree study program of General Medicine as one week of clinical rotation and an additional non-obligatory studies in Geriatrics – clinical case studies in the 5th year of the study. An additional non-obligatory studies of geriatrics is provided as seminars and clinical case studies in winter semester during afternoons. The accent is put on bedside clinical training, the differential diagnosis of the most common diseases in the old age, improvement of student´s communication skills and their ability to work and lead the interdisciplinary geriatric team. Clinical training is complemented by seminars and clinical case studies. They are offered in Czech and English language
